What Happens at an Alcohol Detox Center in Austin?

Austin, Texas is a cultural hub and the home to many craft breweries, bars, clubs, and liquor stores. Alcohol is everywhere, making it difficult for people trying to quit drinking. An inpatient alcohol detox program can make all the difference to your recovery success as you move into a sober detox center away from temptations, triggers, and people who may try and entice you to drink or enable your alcohol addiction.

At Novo Detox’s recovery center, we provide an integrated residential detox program for drugs and alcohol with onsite medical care 24 hours a day, therapy, counseling, medications, and holistic treatments all provided within a comfortable, luxurious setting. During detox, you will live in our 6-bed inpatient rehab center full-time, with access to games, TV, fitness classes, community areas, housekeeping services, a swimming pool, and a fully stocked snack bar. Meals are healthy and organic, with plenty of fresh fruit and smoothies, and you will have access to fitness classes with strength-building and nutritional counseling.

When you first check in to our rehab facility, you will undergo a mental health and medical screening process, including a bio-genetic metabolic profile, so we can customize your medications, medical care, and other therapies as your body removes the toxins from your system, and you heal and gain strength. We will also prescribe medications for your comfort so you do not suffer serious withdrawal symptoms as your body readjusts to the lack of alcohol. To improve your overall wellness and recovery results, our detox center provides personalized treatments you may take part in like acupuncture, saltwater therapy, detox massage, Tai Chi, herbology, reflexology, Qigong, yoga, and meditation.

Substance use disorders are not only chemical dependence. They also have behavioral, medical, social, and psychological components, so in your alcohol and drug detox at Novo, we begin to incorporate comprehensive treatments immediately, giving you the best possible chance to overcome addiction and move into long-term recovery. We have dual-diagnosis treatment plans for people with co-occurring disorders or mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder. We provide family contact and family therapy so you can stay in touch and rebuild connections with your loved ones. You will stay in the medical detox phase of your treatment until you are ready to move forward into rehab. There is no rush and no pressure to move along, and we will do all we can to ensure you feel respected and safe as you recover from your addiction.

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

One of the main benefits of coming to a rehab center that offers a medically supervised detox, is that we will do all we can to ensure you do not suffer from your withdrawal symptoms. Some people will continue substance abuse for longer than they want to out of fear of the pain and medical issues that come with detoxing, but at Novo Detox, Austin residents do not need to fear their symptoms, as our medical staff provides the medical care, as well as the option for prescription medications and/or holistic treatments to keep you safe and comfortable.

Common mild to moderate alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Irritability
  • Anxiety and mood swings
  • Tremors
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Uncontrollable sweating
  • Confusion or brain fog
  • Insomnia and nightmares
  • Headache
  • Increased heart rate
  • Alcohol cravings

If you have been drinking for a long time, have been drinking a lot of alcohol, or have been mixing alcohol with other substances, if untreated, your withdrawal can escalate to dangerous levels, with high fever, agitation, confusion, delusions, hallucinations, seizures, delirium tremens, and in serious cases, death. Because you will be detoxing inside a medical center with 24-hour care, we will be there the second you show any signs of serious symptoms and will take all necessary steps to ensure you are comfortable and do not suffer or experience danger. We will provide medications to promote relaxation while eliminating pain, cravings, and distress, along with therapy for emotional support, family contact, detox massage, stretching, etc. for a whole-patient approach to healing.

Full Alcohol Detox Timeline

Detoxing from alcohol at the Novo Detox’s treatment center usually takes 3 to 10 days, but everybody’s path to recovery is unique. Even if you and a friend were to enter our medically supervised treatment center after drinking the same amount of alcohol for the same number of days, and we provided the exact same treatments, your timeline would be different because of brain chemistry, biological, physical health, mental health, emotional, and behavioral factors.
There are three potential stages of withdrawal, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians:

  1. Mild (appearing within 6 to 12 hours) – headaches, anxiety, insomnia, stomach issues, and hand tremors
  2. Moderate (appearing within 24 hours) – increased blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, high body temperature, and rapid breathing. Some may experience hallucinations
  3. Severe (appearing within 48-72 hours) – visual or auditory hallucinations, seizures, disorientation, and impaired attention

After you have gotten through approximately 72 hours, your symptoms will most likely reach their peak, and you will begin to feel a little bit better each day. If you have a co-occurring mental health disorder, or if you were using drugs alongside alcohol, your detox may take longer, and in some circumstances, a person’s mood symptoms like fatigue, irritability, and sleep issues may last for weeks or months.

Treatment After Alcohol Detox

After alcohol or drug detox, a patient is usually recommended to move directly into inpatient rehab. This residential treatment program, like detox, takes place as you live inside the center 24 hours a day. At Novo Detox, inpatient rehab programs last 30 to 90 days, depending on your individual needs. You will have structured and planned-out days full of treatments, with evenings free to spend at the gym, watching TV, resting, playing games, reading, or hanging out with other residents.

At Novo Detox you will receive treatment programs and therapies including:

  • 24/7 medical care and a customized medical detox
  • Dual diagnosis treating addiction and a co-occurring disorder like trauma or mental health issues
  • Behavioral health treatments including cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy sessions
  • Holistic therapies like acupuncture, herbology, reflexology, detox massages, saltwater therapy, Tai Chi, yoga, and meditation
  • Family program and family sessions
  • Group therapy
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy
  • Life skills and social skills training
  • Physical fitness, strength building, and nutritional counseling
  • Aftercare planning, case management services, sober living programs, and relapse prevention programs

We also offer connections to outpatient addiction treatment programs for anybody who wants to continue with therapy, structured living, support, doctor’s care, and medication management. Along with detox programs and residential treatment, our network of treatment centers includes the entire continuum of care, with intensive outpatient programming, partial hospitalization treatment plans, customized outpatient programs, and connections to sober living homes, online intensive outpatient treatment, and other aftercare. If you need a connection to an outpatient Austin rehab, our caseworkers can help you choose from your area’s alcohol and drug rehab centers.
