MAT Addiction Treatment in Sacramento
Quitting drugs (and quitting drinking) is not easy, especially if you have been using them for a long time, using large amounts, or mixing different drugs and alcohol together. It can be much more intense than people in your life may understand because addiction is a complex brain disorder that affects every bit of your daily life and your wellness, both physically and mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Addiction is a brain disorder that affects the way you think, the way you make decisions, and the way you behave, and physical dependence causes difficult withdrawal symptoms and distress when you try to stop drinking or using drugs on your own.
These issues are further exacerbated if you also have mental health issues. Many people who abuse alcohol or drugs also have a co-occurring mental illness, like PTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, schizoaffective disorder, ADHD, mood disorders, and other psychological and behavioral health issues that require professional treatment. Using drugs and alcohol to mask your symptoms may work in the short-term, like drinking at a party to avoid feelings of anxiety or using cocaine to feel artificially energetic and happy, but it comes at a cost. Drugs can worsen your symptoms over time, interfere with psychiatric medications and treatments, cause problems in your life that worsen mental health issues, and may become a barrier to seeking the help you need.
There are also underlying reasons that you have turned toward substance abuse, which may stem from past experiences and trauma that can result in relapse if left untreated. Those with substance use disorders need to get therapy for these issues and learn new ways to work through stressful situations and uncomfortable feelings in a comprehensive treatment plan that provides holistic care that focuses on the whole person, not just the physical aspects of addiction. For many drug and alcohol users, this includes a medication-assisted treatment program.
Many times, the only way to truly be able to stop substance abuse is through a comprehensive rehabilitation program that provides medical care, therapy, counseling, case management, and education in a safe, supportive, and caring environment. People are not one-dimensional, and you are not simply “an addict”. You are a complex human being worthy of getting help and overcoming this substance use disorder, and at Novo Detox, we can help you do so through an integrated medication-assisted inpatient treatment program that includes medical detox programs and a short- or long-term residential rehab plan, followed by further connections to outpatient treatments and long-term aftercare options. You will never be alone in your drug or alcohol addiction treatment in Sacramento.
What Is MAT?
MAT stands for medication-assisted treatment and is often used to help taper off the intake of substances in a slow, methodical manner for safer detoxification. MAT is most often used for:
- Heroin, oxy, fentanyl, and other opioid drugs
- Benzodiazepine drugs like Xanax and Ativan
- Alcohol
Medication-assisted treatment is a whole-patient approach for moderate to severe drug and alcohol addictions that combines:
- Medical detox for acute withdrawal symptoms of detox, which may include increased heart rate, fever, flu-like symptoms, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, tremors, and serious drug cravings. You will be provided with 24-hour medical supervision and care to ensure you are safe, with prescription medications to help ease any discomfort, and counseling to help you with difficult emotions or thoughts during this 5 to 10-day period.
- Prescription doses of FDA-approved medications are provided on a doctor-approved schedule that slowly tapers off your dosage over a long period of weeks or months. This is the best way for people to wean off drugs that cause recurring withdrawal symptoms and cravings and for substances that would cause dangerous or difficult longer-term issues if they were to quit cold turkey. The medications will ease cravings, pain, and other discomforts that detoxing may cause, but they will not cause a new addiction nor will they get you high.
- Medical treatments and oversight ensure you stay safe and that the medications are doing the job they are supposed to do. You will likely begin your MAT program inside an inpatient facility and then transition to outpatient care over time, coming in for medications on a set schedule.
- Therapy and counseling programs begin right away. This includes behavioral therapy, group therapy, individual psychotherapy, and more, helping you get to the underlying root of your addiction and heal emotional pain and your body.
- Holistic or spiritual healing methods help you to reconnect with yourself, strengthen your mind-body connection, and improve your overall wellness and quality of life by improving self-esteem, introducing natural pain and stress relief techniques, and allowing you to see a new perspective on life. Many holistic techniques are available to people in recovery, with each facility offering different treatments and options, including breathwork, meditation, exercise programs, and massage therapy.
- Continued care for as long as you need it. There is no magical end date by which you will be “healed” from addiction. It is a lifelong process that you take daily, and the reality is that some of those days will be hard. In a long-term MAT program in a rehab center, you will gain connections to peer groups and sober support networks and will always be welcome back to the center if you need help.
Medication-assisted treatment programs are proven to save lives. At Novo Detox, we have long-term MAT treatment plans for our patients that begin as soon as you are ready. We will provide the care, medications, support, and welcoming safe atmosphere you need to begin your journey down your own personal road to recovery inside our inpatient treatment center. Your body will slowly adjust to lower and lower doses of these medications over time, and at the same time, you will work on your resilience, life skills, relapse prevention techniques, wellness, mental health, and physical health as you begin to look toward your future as a person who is in control of their own life. Quitting drugs and alcohol is not easy, but in a Novo Detox MAT program, you can rest assured that you will be as safe and comfortable as possible as you do the work to improve your health and your quality of life.
