Is Ed Sheeran in Recovery?
Ed Sheeran Opens Up About Struggles With Alcohol
Although currently in the news for talking about continuing on as one of the musical guests on Saturday Night Live after testing positive for COVID-19 along with his daughter a few months ago on the Howard Stern show, English singer Ed Sheeran was recently in the headlines before his appearance on the Saturday night TV staple. The Grammy award winner has opened up about his struggle with substance abuse in the past and how alcohol addiction and the use of other substances have affected his life and caused him to take a break from the music industry to focus on his own health.
If you were to look up his 2017 interview with talk show host Jonathan Ross, you would be able to watch as Sheeran talks about how his fast rise to international fame affected him in ways he did not expect and led to the adoption of dangerous substance abuse habits, stating “I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour… and all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.”
The stress of not only being in a fast-paced and notoriously shady industry, as well as the constant pressure to perform and be a certain way in the public eye, would affect anybody, especially when surrounded by others who are freely drinking and using drugs. Ed Sheeran began abusing alcohol at parties and social events but eventually started drinking while alone, a behavior that worried friends and family enough for them to say something, helping him to see the path he had begun to walk down. “…it all starts off as a party, and then you’re doing it on your own, and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call…”
Sheeran’s talk with Jonathan Ross revealed that he took a year off from writing and creating music in the industry to work on his own health after loved ones expressed their concern. Ed Sheeran talks candidly about an incident in which he crashed a bicycle he had been riding after drinking, breaking both arms but not realizing it. He went to the pub instead of the hospital but realized something was seriously wrong early the next morning. Because of alcohol abuse and his accident, Ed Sheeran told Jonathan Ross he had to cancel an entire leg of his world tour to heal, and it could have been much worse if he had not gotten the help that he needed for his substance abuse issues.
What Inspired Ed Sheeran to Get Sober?
Along with the bicycle crash issue that Sheeran talks about in the interview with host Jonathan Ross, Ed Sheeran was inspired to get sober through the support and concern of his loved ones. He credits his year-long break from the industry and resulting recovery to his then girlfriend, now wife, Cherry Seaborn’s unrelenting help balancing him out again. They now have a young daughter together, whose existence has solidified his decision to stop, saying “It wasn’t until knowing that I was going to be a dad and knowing I had to be a supportive husband that it was like right. I am done. It is when you grow up and have responsibilities…now here I am being a responsible adult drinking water.” Thanks to Cherry Seaborn’s support, the love of his family, and the caring push from his friends, Sheeran has the motivation to quit drugs and alcohol for good.

Ed Sheeran spoke about how focusing on his work in the music industry helped him when he was struggling with substance abuse (such as being the musical guest on Saturday Night Live) because he knew he could not do his best work while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, joining the ranks of other sober-leaning, healthier celebrities like Harry Styles. Sheeran talks about substance use to help others who may be in a similar situation to him, those who feel they have an addictive personality, those in the music industry, or those struggling with drugs and alcohol.
